A chemical return with an SDS but opened packaging

A customer returns a chemical because the wrong product was delivered. The SDS is current but the packaging is opened.

Case Studies / Case 10 · Chemical Returns Advisor (draft, not yet published)

Status: Tool output reproduced from the advisor rules (draft-0.1, 8 October 2026). Not reviewed by a DGSA.
What’s at stake

A return is a new shipment: whoever sends it takes on the dangerous-goods duties, and an opened chemical may not be resellable.

Case 10 · 2 min read · Last reviewed 8 October 2026

Problem

A customer returns a chemical because the wrong product was delivered. The SDS is current but the packaging is opened.

Input

SDS: yes. Dangerous goods: yes. Reason: wrong item. Packaging: opened. Shelf life: valid. Storage: as expected. Contamination: none. Batch: traceable. Value: high. Supplier take-back: no.

What I did

  1. Answer the ten questions in the advisor.
  2. Read the route, the reasons, who must approve and the return transport note.

Result

Real output of the advisor rules (draft-0.1, run on 8 October 2026): route “Technical assessment for repack or alternative use”. Approvals: QC / technical, DGSA, Commercial. The return movement itself is dangerous-goods transport.

Where it can go wrong

Not reviewed by a DGSA yet, and waste-law questions for the EU are not covered. Treat the result as a first screening.

Human verification

  • QC confirms the product still meets specification.
  • DGSA confirms packaging, marks and documents.
  • Commercial decides if the cost is worth the value.
